This spot offers one of the most dramatic views in Teton National Park.

In the fall hunting in the National Forest lands of Island Park offers almost unlimited areas to test your skills. Most deer and elk hunting areas are open to general hunting during the season. Acquire your tags through local outfitters.

Or connect with the local trail system off of Route 20 north all the way to West Yellowstone or south into Idaho, or along Red Rock Rd or the Sawtell Trail. Island Park is actually the world's largest caldera (larger than Yellowstone Park), 23 miles in diameter, created from a volcano that collapsed in prehistoric times. Now covered in a dense forest of pine and wildflowers, it is a great place to enjoy hiking and fishing in the summer and skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. The Henry's Fork of the Snake River, a world famous fly-fishing stream, is curtailed here to form the 7,000 acre Island Park Reservoir, popular to both anglers and boaters. The Henry's Fork then winds through the meadows of one of Idaho's premier state parks - Harriman State Park. The park is a protected area for ducks, geese, osprey, golden eagles, bald eagles, bears, elk, deer and moose. You can hike, fish, cycle or ride the park's trails on horseback or simply observe the wildlife that abounds in the park.

A most rewarding side trip on your way driving north down Highway 20 to Island Park is the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway. At Ashton, turn onto Highway 47 and slowly descend into an unexpected canyon. The Lower Mesa Falls is 65' high and can be viewed from an observation point high above the falls. The Upper Mesa Falls is 112' and has boardwalks and viewing platforms, where you can see breathtaking views of the falls cascading down into the Snake River.
