Mountain Lake Cabin with wildflowers

Located just 23 miles west of West Yellowstone in Island Park, Idaho, Mountain Lake Cabin sits on a half acre property, surrounded by pine trees and aspens, and bordered by Targhee National Forest. A glimpse of Henry's Lake, surrounded by towering mountains, can be seen from the deck. Mountain Lake Cabin, built in 2003, is the perfect home base for exploration of the Yellowstone and Teton National Parks. This 1508 sq.ft. two-story 3 bedroom/2 bathroom year-round vacation home has a large loft with a sleeper couch and sleeps 8 comfortably. It is fully equipped and tastefuly furnished. The Great Room with its floor to ceiling windows and the log staircase and vertical logs supporting the cathedral ceiling add to the rustic charm of this lovely mountain home in the woods. The alluring view draws your eyes outward, through quaking aspens and pines, over Henry's Lake, and finally to the rising mountains of the Continental Divide. The cabin has high speed internet access. No smoking, please. Pets aren't allowed.

Knotty pine tongue and groove walls and ceilings, pine plank flooring, slate tiles and plush carpet create a cozy and rustic atmosphere in the cabin. Comfortable furnishings welcome you to a very relaxing experience! A fully equipped kitchen with breakfast bar and stools opens onto the Great Room, with two comfortable leather couches, a recliner and a corner cast iron gas stove, backed by a floor to ceiling river rock wall. The first floor master bedroom has a log bed and the master bathroom has a full bath/shower. In the rear of the cabin is a large mudroom, that has a washer and dryer, and a door to the rear deck. The rear deck is very private, and looks out over the adjoining Targhee National Forest that rises up to the heights of Sawtelle Mountain. To the side of the cabin in the rear is a firepit, where you can gather to roast marshmallows, share the day's activities and reminisce...

If you like snowmobiling, this is the place for you! You can actually snowmobile right from the cabin going off-trail or on the trails down the road to Henry's Lake State Park. Or go to the many miles of groomed trails at Big Springs (off of Highway 20 south by Mack's Inn). Island Park and West Yellowstone have hundreds of miles of interconnected groomed snowmobile trails. Cross-country skiing can be enjoyed at the Harriman State Park in Island Park, or at the world-famous RendezVous Ski Trails in West Yellowstone. Come for the annual Ski Festival around Thanksgiving or visit during the Annual RendezVous Race in March. Here you'll find 26 miles of groomed trails to enjoy. In the summer the trails offer great hiking opportunities.

For hunting the National Forest lands offer almost unlimited areas to test your skills.
The large Island Park Reservoir is popular for waterskiing and sightseeing; visitors may drive on the top of the dam for scenic views of the Centennial Mountains and Box Canyon. In the summer months it's a great place to swim.

Within walking distance, down the road from Mountain Lake Cabin, is Meadow Vue Ranch, where you can experience the Old West. During the summer months the ranch offers horseback riding, and every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday there are rodeos and BBQs, that start at 5 pm.

Off of Highway 20 going south from Red Rock Rd (the road that leads to the cabin) you'll find High Mountain Adventures (by the Sawtelle Mountain Resort) where you can rent mountain bikes, kayaks, canoes, rafts, tubes and 4-wheelers. In the winter they rent snowmobiles.

Out front the extensive wraparound redwood deck with its log railing has comfortable lounge chairs and deck furniture. Look forward to casual meals and BBQs there, enjoying the sound of the quaking aspens.

Up the log staircase is a large loft with a queen-size pullout couch, an overstuffed chair with ottoman, and small table with two chairs where you can play games. It is a cozy place to talk, read, or watch movies on DVD/VHS or Satellite TV. There are two upstairs bedrooms; one with a queen bed, and the other with a pair of twin beds. The upstairs bathroom has a shower. Up a log ladder tucked under the apex of the cathedral ceiling is an eagle's nest loft.

You can take very interesting daytrips into Yellowstone Park, which is only a half hour away. This Park is a wonderland of rivers, lakes, waterfalls, canyons, boiling mud pots and spouting geysers, and is home to a multitude of elk, deer, moose, bison, wolves, coyotes, and bears, as well as many birds of prey. Teton National Park, 84 miles to the southeast, is also well within reach for daytrips.

Depending on the season boating, swimming, white water rafting, hiking, mountain biking, golf, snowmobiling, sledding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are all available in Island Park and neighboring West Yellowstone.

Mountain Lake Cabin - you can snowmobile away from the cabin onto the trails!

Meadow Vue Ranch - rodeos and BBQs 5 minutes from the cabin
Henry's Fork, known for some of the best dry fly fishing

The first settlers of Island Park were various tribes of the North American Indians - you can find Indian artifacts such as spearheads, arrowheads and broken utensils along the banks of the Snake River and around the shores of Henrys Lake.

The Henrys Lake State Park is worth visiting - many song and shore birds frequent the area, and moose and antilope are a common sight. Wildflowers create a beautiful display of colors. The 3-mile Aspen Loop Nature Trail is open to hikers and bikers.

Today Island Park is well known for its fishing, hunting, water sports and snowmobiling. Island Park tends to have 3-5 feet of snow on the ground during winter, which makes Island Park a winter wonderland. It serves as a hub for many nearby recreational activities: guests are within easy driving distance of Yellowstone National Park, Red Rocks National Wildlife Refuge, Mesa Falls Scenic Byway, Harriman State Park, Quake Lake, and the old mining towns of Virginia and Nevada City in Montana.

The fishing in Henry's Lake and surrounding rivers and streams is an angler's dream - the area is a world-famous for its trout fishing. The best fishing access to Henrys Lake is at the south shore access (2 miles from the cabin). Enjoy the peace and quiet as you fish on the lake, surrounded by the mountains of the Continental Divide. The Henry's Fork of the Snake River flows out of the lake and is acclaimed by fly-fishing enthusiasts as the 'best trout fishing stream in the U.S.' Another source for the Henry's Fork comes from Big Springs, where 120 million gallons of water bubble up into the river each day. Big Springs is only 16 miles from the cabin close to Mack's Inn (south on Route 20 from the cabin - take a left turn into Big Springs Loop Rd). Big Springs has many trails for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. On the way to Big Springs there is a warming hut. In the summer you can hike and raft there.
